Do We Need a New Internet?

The Article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/weekinreview/15markoff.html

Interesting story:

Two decades ago a 23-year-old Cornell University graduate student brought the Internet to its knees with a simple software program that skipped from computer to computer at blinding speed, thoroughly clogging the then-tiny network in the space of a few hours..Since then things have gotten much, much worse.

According to engineers and security experts, Internet security and privacy is so threatened that the only way to fix it is to start again.

My Two Cents: WHAT?!?! Sure, I always read and hear that the Internet is not secure and you should be careful, but is it so flawed that the only way to remedy this is to start over? I guess I have to bow to the experts here… it just seems crazy that we have created this monster, in a sense, and now we have to euthanize it in order to restore our original intent. It’s very telling of our society, though: we create something, it goes bad, so we ditch it and make something new. But how do we know the next Internet won’t be just as bad, if not worse?
